Complaint Filed Against Combs.
As a result of the investigation,
made by Sheriff Bratton and As-
sistant County Attorney Moyers,
Geo. O. Combs was yesterday
afternoon arrested on a oharge
of assault with intent to murder
his wife. Mr. Moyers filed the
complaint before Justice Cook of
that precinct, and a warrant was
at once iseued for his arrest.
Sheriff Bratton served the war-
rant at once, and waving pre-
liminary hearing, Mr. Combs was
allowed bail in the sura of $1.000,
wbioh he readily gave and was
released. There seems to be no
evidence against Combs exoept
that of oiroumstances. His own
statement to the officers' was that
he was oarrying the pistol, with
which he shot his wife, in the
hope that he would get to shoot a
wolf. He was carelessly hand-
ling the pistol, having, as he
thought, remdved the only cart-
ridge it contained. He was not
pointing the pistol at his wife in-
tentionally. It just happened,
that when the oartridge exploded,
the pistol was accidentally point
ing towards Mrs. Combs.
This is his , statement to
the offioers. Mrs. Combs
stated, among other things, that
she knew her husband had been
oarrying a pistol ever sinoe she
oame to live with him again, after
their separation. It is not known
that they had any trouble since
their separation and subsequent
reunion. Henoe the statement
evidence is only circumstantial.
It has been learned this morn
ing that Mrs. Combs die_d last
night at 12 o'olook. It is now
likely that Mr. Combs will be re-
arrested on a oharge of murder,

an unthinking public has grown
somewhat careless in their new

was possibly the instinct of self
preservation that prompted the
barring of gates, and even bolt-

Since this is no longer necessary,
there are those who have* grown
careless and the garden gate is
allowed to swing to and fro at

INFLAMED THROATS
The mucous membrane of your throat is very delicate and susceptible
to injury. Por tha^ reason you should be careful to select a cough syrup

and very uncerimoniously bump
into an open gate. It is only
thoughtlessness on the part of
those who might have at some
time left their gaties unlatched,
but the gates are no longer a
necessity, hence, why not remove
them, together with unsightly
fences to which some of them are
attached. Your place will only
look the better for this bit of im-
provement, and at the same time
you will become a public bene-
factor by removing .the oause of
possible accident.
Who will be the next one to
take down his fence and gate?
Those who have already done so
have materially added to the ap-
pearance of their property, so
why not follow suit.
Ladies Are Around.
The Herald learns that at a re-
cent meeting of the Home Science
Department of the XXth Century
club, the ladies took up the siiL •
ject of civic improvement in a
manner^ that, if carried to a suc-
cessful culmination (and who
ever heard of the good women
failing in anything they under-
took for the welfare of the town)
will redound to their credit for
years to come, and will add more
to the health of our town and the
beauty of our streets than any
thing they have yet undertaken.
It is stated that they will peti-
tion the city council to pass a
law prohibiting any one' from
spitting on the sidewalks [of the
city. -
This is a matter the Herald has
been working on for over a year,
and with the aid of the ladies we
are sure that we will soon see
such a law in force and effect.
