Rev. George W. Whistler died on February 17, 1939, and was buried in Ft. Worth on February
18, 1939. He was the son of Isaac and Mary Ann Reppard Whistler of Ohio. He was born in
Richland, Ohio, on November 28, 1861. He was the youngest of eight children.
He came to Texas in 1875, and was called to preach and was admitted to the North Texas
Conference, then ordained as Deacon and Elder. He was married to Josephine F. McAfee on
October. 15, 1890. They five children; William R. Whistler of Oklahoma City, Vera Whistler of
Dallas, Mrs. M. R. Whitmore and Mrs. R. D. Cummings of Ft. Worth and Mrs. L. Hendricks Jr.,
of San Diego, California. Mrs. Josephine Whistler died in 1920.
May 18, 1939
Rev. H. B. Smith, 71, pastor of East Bernard Methodist Church, Wharton County, died in
Galveston on Monday. The funeral was held on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife and four
children. He had been secretary of the Conference since 1933.
Rev. W. M. Rogers died at his home near Allison, Texas on April 28, 1939. Services were held
on April 29, at the Methodist Church in Allison.
Mrs. Mary Isabell Dennis, 80, died in Nocona, Texas on April 26, 1939. Services were held on
April 27 in First Methodist Church and interment was in the Nocona Cemetery. She is survived
by four daughters: Mrs. Opal Gazaway of Seminole, Mrs. Anna Moore, Mrs. Lura Paine, and
Mrs. Missie Paine, all of Nocona; two sons, Elder Dennis of Tucumcari, New Mexico, and Scott
Dennis of Grady, Oklahoma. She is preceded in death by her husband and three children.
May 25, 1939
Eugene W. Anderson, D.D., was born in Hart County, Kentucky, on October 15, 1854, and died
on March 9, 1939. Services were held in the Highland Park Methodist Church in Dallas.
Interment was in Bonham, Texas.
M. H. B. B. Ogan. Michael Homer Burgess Burket Ogan was born in Calloway County,
Missouri. on December 24, 1858. He died on February 18, 1939. He married Miss Gertrude
Crissmann, of Henry County, Missouri. They had four children: Cecilia (Mrs. J. C. Mann),
Grace, Maggie (deceased), and Eugene H., living near the old home.
Mrs. Mary Reese Harris was born March 15, 1851, in Anderson, South Carolina, and died
March 14, 1939, in El Paso, Texas. She was the daughter of E. M. and Caroline Wardlaw Reese.
Mrs. Harris was the great-granddaughter of Gen. Andrew Pickens and Gen. Robert Anderson,
both of the Revolutionary War. She is survived by four sons: Joseph Pickens of Mineral Wells,
Milton Reese of El Paso, Edward Bissell of Rule, and Jack Anderson of Wichita Falls. Her four
surviving daughters were with her at the end: Misses Annie, Ruth and Floride of El Paso and
Mrs. Calhoun Monroe of Electra. Two children died in infancy and another daughter preceded
her in death, Mrs. Mamie Burkhalter on October 17, 1930, as did her husband, Dr. Joseph
Pickens Harris in 1905. She is survived by four grandsons: Harris Burkhalter of Madisonville,
Kentucky, J. B. Burkhalter of Odessa, Texas, E. B. Harris of Austin; and Martin Reese Harris of
