WLCJ to convene in
Dallas with speakers,
events and services
Sisterhoods from many states
and provinces will be represented
this coming week when the Wom-
en's League of Conservative Juda-
ism holds its Intracontinental Re-
gion Conference in Dallas.
The region, under the presi-
dency of Houston's Karen Lukin,
cuts a swath through the middle
of the North American continent,
from Canada to South Texas. Dele-
gates will be in session throughout
Sunday and Monday at the Mar-
riott Quorum Hotel, with "L'Dor
V'Dor" as their theme.
Regional conference chair is
Judy Goldstein of Minnetonka,
Minn. Local arrangements have
been made by representatives of
Dallas' three Conservative congre-
gations with WLCJ Sisterhood af-
filiates: Diane Lifshen, Shearith Is-
rael; Bobbie Berger, Anshai Torah;
and Harriet Gross, Beth Torah.
For early out-of-town arrivals
and local attendees, Havdallah will
be celebrated outdoors at the hotel
at 8:55 p.m. Saturday, led by Ruth
Schor, Congregation Beth Torah's
Learning Center director.
The conference, formally be-
ginning on Sunday, will highlight
today's evolving intergenerational
aspects of synagogue sisterhoods.
That afternoon, Carrie Stevens,
Dallas Jewish Family Service so-
cial worker who facilitates mother-
daughter groups in local schools,
will join with Goldstein for an
interactive session on "Differ-
ent Generations Speaking to Each
Other." On Monday, JFS Director
of Volunteers Janine Pulman and
Barbara Schwarz, award-winning
volunteer who initiated the agen-
cy's "Mitzvah Central," will lead
all delegates in intergenerational
brainstorming on how to identify
and help meet the varying needs of
their own communities.
Each Women's League confer-
ence is assigned a special consul-
tant, a woman with extensive prior
experience in the organization's
leadership and administration.
This conference's consultant, Re-
nee Glazier of Boston, a former
region president, will present a
special session on "The Power
of Advocacy," emphasizing how
sisterhoods and their individual
members can impact change.
Other Dallas presenters on the
schedule include Gil Elan of South-
west Jewish Congress, with an
Israel update, and June Penkar of
the Jewish Community Relations
Renee Glazier of Boston will present a
special session on "The Power of Ad-
vocacy" at the conference.
Council, speaking on the current
Texas textbook controversy and its
national impact. During the con-
ference, a relaxing Tai Chi session
will be led by Debbie Ginchansky.
Two dinner events will show-
case special local entertainment.
On Sunday at the hotel, Hollace
Ava Weiner, Fort Worth author,
historian and archivist, will pres-
ent slides, stories and commentary
drawn from "Lone Stars of Texas,"
the book on the state's Jewry that
she co-edited with Temple Sha-
lom's Rabbi Emeritus Kenneth
Roseman. Following Monday's
Texas barbecue at Shearith Is-
rael, "Musical Magic" by Miriam
Creemer, Mimi Guten and Lori
Cohen will feature Jewish women
in song and on stage.
Services are always paramount
at Women's League conferences.
Mincha on Sunday evening will
be led at the hotel by delegates
from St. Louis; everyone will at-
tend Shearith Israel's Mincha ser-
vices on Monday before the din-
ner. The women of Winnipeg will
lead early morning Shacharit and
Torah services on Monday, with
Torah study following, presented
by Rabbi Wendy Pein of Piano's
Congregation Adat Chaverim. St.
Paul's sisterhood members will
lead the Shacharit service on Tues-
day morning, prior to the confer-
ence's final meetings.

aspects of activities in which all
sisterhoods take part will be pre-
sented by Women's League leaders:
