Lady Rattlers Win Three Games
The Rio Grande City Lady
'Rattler basketball games won
three of their first four games last
week, finishing third in the Weslaco
tournament over the weekend.
1 In the Weslaco tournament over
the weekend, the Lady Rattlers
defeated Los Fresnos 63-36, lost to
Weslaco 50-44, and defeated
Mission
place.
45-39 to finish in third
In their season opening game last
Monday at home, the Lady Rattlers
overwhelmed Zapata 50-20. The
score by quarters was as follows:
first quarter, 18-2; halftime, 28-8;
third quarter, 34-13.
Myrna Bazan paced the Lady
Rattlers with 13 points against
Zapata. Loreen Lopez added 12 and
Maribel Bermea 10, while Norma
De La Cruz and Bertha Alaniz
chipped in with eight and seven
points, respectively.
About the season opener, Coach
Gracie Gonzalez commented, "I
Close
and free throw shooting were our
most positive points. We need to
execute better in half-court. Our
shot selection has got to improve,
and probably will as we go along."
Guerra added, "For us to be
successful, we need to have a lot of
easy shots, off fast breaks and the
press. We had some ear'v, but need
more."
„ The score by quarters was as
follows: first quarter- Roma, 21-7;
second quarter- Roma, 31-19; third
quarter, Roma, 35-31.
About the Rattler comeback
effort, Coach Lopez commented,
"We changed up our press at
halftime, and came out and pre-
ssed more often, causing some

turnovers. Our kids played good
defense inside and forced them to
take a lot of outside shots. It was a
good defensive effort." He noted
that the Gladiators were contained
to only four points in the third
period.
The Rattlers could not make it
over the hump, noted Lopez,
because "we were in foul trouble,
so Roma was on the foul line
constantly." Four Rattler players-
Armando Lopez, Lalo Chapa,
Enrique Garcia, and Horacio
Flores- fouled out.
For the game, Roma's free throw
shooting was the difference as the
Gladiators hit 28 of 35 shots from
Who Needs Flu
Vaccinations?
• •
HOUSTON-Family members and
friends who care for the elderly or
chronically ill have been added to
the list of those who should receive
an annual flu vaccination, a Baylor
College of Medicine flu specialist
said.
Previous federal guidelines did
not emphasize individuals who
provide home nursing care for
family members or friends on the
list of those who should receive
yearly influenza vaccinations.
Other individuals on the list, as in
the past, are military personnel,
helath care workers, anyone ovr 65
years of age, and those of all ages
who have heart, lung or metabolic
disease such as diabetes.
"The federal guidelines were
expanded because anyone who
comes into close contact with the
chronically ill, or the elderly should
be protected against the flu," said
Dr Paul Glezen, a researcher in
Baylor's Influenza Research
Center. "This way they are less
likely to pass it on to those who
could face a life-threatening com-
plication from influenza."
Glezen urged those who should or
want to recieve a flu shot to do so
now because it takes about two
weeks for the vaccinations to take
effect.
The 1987-88 influenza season will
probably start in late November or
early December. The current vac-
cine will provide protection against
the three types of flu viruses
expected to circulate this season,
which are A/Leningrad, A/Taiwan
and B/Victoria.
Glezen said the B/Victoria virus
will probably cause the mose
illnesses this year The B viruses

the charity stripe. The leading
Roma scorer, Manuel Alvapez,
scored 17 of 21 points from the foul
line. The Rattlers were able to sink
only 12 of their 24 free throw
opportunities.
For the game, the Rattlers were
cold from the field, hitting only 12
of their 38 shots. However, Rio was
three of five from three-point
range, with Joe Whatley connecting
on two of three three-point shots,
and Dave Jones hitting one of two
three-pointers.
Roma's leading scorers were:
Manuel Alvarez, 21; Omar Canales,
10; Leonel Perez, 8; and Bobby
Garcia, 6. Gladiator Coach Guerra
said that Roma's shooting percent-
age from the field was in the high
30's.
The leading Rattler scorer was
guard Horacio Flores with 11
points. Dave Jones, Enrique Garcia
and Joe Whatley added nine, eight,
and six, respectively.
Jones was the leading Rattler
rebounder with eight, and Ricardo
Gutierrez hauled in six boards.
Jones and Enrique Garcia each
contributed one assist. Jones was
the leader in steals with four, with
Flores and Whatley adding three
apiece.
The Rattlers managed to cut
down their turnover total down to
18 against the Gladiators.
The Rattlers, after playing Freer
on Tuesday evening, are scheduled
to face Brownsville Pace Friday
night and La Joya at home on
Tuesday night.
The Gladiators, 1-0 for the young
season, are scheduled to play
Kingsville High in the first round of
the Raymondville tournament this
Friday. On Tuesday night, they will
go on the road to face McAllen
High. On Tuesday night, Nov. 24,
Roma was scheduled to play
Pharr-San Juan-Alamo at home.

from the foul line, while Weslaco
was eight of 20 from the charity
stripe. Gonzalez said, "We had our
