Dr. Clodfelter explains vision of life
Looking at world through positive eyes key to success
by Katherine Cook
Co-Commentary Editor
Students should turn negatives
into positives, Dr. Cherie
Clodfelter, professor of education,
said at the Last Chance Lecture
last Wednesday.
More than 20 students were
there to hear her speak in the
Gorman Faculty Lounge.
Dr. Clodfelter had to change
her lifestyle drastically when she
found out she had lupus, but she
advised students to keep things in
perspective.
"If you ever do something
where you wake up in the morn-
ing and say, 'Oh, why do I have
to do this?' Then quit it-life is too
short," she said.
Another example of turning the
negative into a positive was her
time at Oklahoma State. Dr.
Clodfelter won a scholarship to
play piano there, but she said she
hated it. She learned to play with
her feet so she could take food into
the practice room and eat instead.
When she broke three of her
fingers playing volleyball, she
said she looked at that painful ex-
perience in a positive note by
thinking to herself that she no
longer had to keep her piano
scholarship.
Dr. Clodfelter also talked about
her brother and the value of sib-
lings.
"I have always felt that having
siblings is the greatest challenge
and also one of the greatest helps
in our lives because you learn how
to con, and believe me I know how
to con. But more importantly you
learn how to live because of the
constant give and take of that re-
lationship;' she said.
The educator also spoke about
the university itself and her views.
"I never try to burden anyone
with jargon that doesn't serve a
purpose. All of us, in every field,
have a certain vocabulary that we
use to communicate. But I have
noticed, particularly around UD,
that there is this part of language
that becomes a part of some dis-
ciplines that is almost exclusion-
ary of others," she said.
"The first day I came to this
campus, I was fresh out of the
classroom, and UD was doing a
self-study. I was put on a com-
mittee made up mostly people
from theology. I had no idea what
they were talking about. It was
like another whole language," she
continued.
Dr. Clodfelter said she deplored
the notion of toying with language
simply for politically correct rea-
sons
"I'm a chairman-that's what I
am. Not a chairwoman, not a
chairperson, not a chair. You don't
change the linguistics just to be
politically correct," she said.
Some unkown formula in the
UD education makes each person
different, Dr. Clodfelter said.
"There's something about UD,
you can't put it into words, but it
makes you all different. It might
be that I've never seen a sadistic
individual at UD, other than the
faculty," she said.

agree her bark that Is worse than her bite; she is not harmful in the least.
Dr. Clodfelter closed her
speech by criticizing psycholo-
gists who are always urging
people to try to know themselves
better.
"Who am I? I really don't
know, and I don't care to know.
My life would be pretty boring if
I did know," she said.
