Beall, John Yates.
Born in Virginia. Appointed from Virginia. Acting master, March 5,
1863. Master not in line of promotion Provisional Navy, June 2, 1864.
On September 10, 1863, in charge of party, destroyed four Federal schooners
in Chesapeake Bay. Captured November 16, 1863, Accomac County, Va.;
paroled at Point Lookout, Md., March 16, 1864; exchanged March 20,
1864, at City Point, Va. Captured the steamers Pliilo Parsons and
Island Queen in an attempt to release C. S. prisoners on Johnsons Island,
September 19, 1864; captured; tried on charges of violation of the laws
of war and acting as a spy, and sentenced to be hanged on Governor's
Island, New York Harbor, February 24, 1865.
