Captain Marine Corps (nominated), July 30, 1861. Major,
Served at Headquarters, Richmond, Va., 1863-1865. Captured April 14,
1865, by the Army of the Potomac. Paroled at Greensboro, N. C.

Born in North Carolina. Appointed from North Carolina. Second assist-
ant engineer, January 29, 1863. Second assistant engineer Provisional
Navy, June 2, 1864.
Served on C. S. steamers North Carolina and Raleigh, Wilmington station,
1863-64. Steamer Coquette, 1864. C. S. S. Tallahassee (Olustee), 1864.
Semmes naval brigade, 1865; paroled at Greensboro, N. C., April 28,
1865.
Greenhow, James W. B.
Born in Georgia. Appointed from Georgia. Formerly passed assistant
surgeon, U. S. Navy. Surgeon, August 2, 1861. Surgeon, October 23,
1862, to rank from March 26, 1861. Surgeon Provisional Navy, June
2, 1864.
Served on C. S. S. Sea Bird, 1861-62; participated in battle at Elizabeth
City, N. C., February 10, 1862; prisoner; paroled off Roanoke Island,
N. C., February 12, 1862. C. S. S. Arctic, Wilmington station, 1862--63.
Fleet surgeon, Wilmington, N. C., 1864. C. S. S. Yadkin, Wilmington
station, 1864.
Gregory, Samuel S.
Born in North Carolina. Appointed from North Carolina. Resigned as
midshipman, U. S. Navy, class of 1859. Acting midshipman, June 20,

motion, January 7, 1864. Second lieutenant Provisional Navy, June 2,

Griggs, William W.

1863-64. Temporarily at Charleston, S. C.,. 1863. Battery Buchanan,
N. C., 1864. Captured January 15, 1865, Fort Fisher. Transferred to
City Point, Va., February 25, 1865, for exchange. Paroled at Greens-
boro, N. C., April 28, 1865.
Grimball, John.
Born in South Carolina. Appointed from South Carolina. Resigned as
midshipman U. S. Navy, December 24, 1860. Midshipman, April 16, 1861.
Master, May 6, 1861. Acting lieutenant, September 19, 1861. Lieu-
tenant for the war, February 8, 1862. First lieutenant, February 8,
1862. First lieutenant, October 23, 1862, to rank from October 2,

In South Carolina Navy, 1861; at Fort Moultrie when steamer Star of the
