Obituary
Lillie M. (Derry) Brown was born in Armstrong Colony of
Waelder, Texas to the late Grant and Medora Derry on
September 3, 1908, and departed this life to be with the Lord
on December 4, 2006 at the age of 98. Mrs. Brown was the
sixth of ten children, and after graduating from Waelder High
School, she attended Guadalupe College and taught public school
for several years. She married the late Robert E. Brown, Jr. on
April 3, 1932, and was widowed in October 2004 after 72 years
of marriage. To that union was born three sons, one of whom
died as an infant.
On April 10,1932, she united with the West End Baptist Church
and remained a faithful member until her death. After serving
as President of the Junior Mission for several years, Mrs. Brown
served as President of Mission #1 of the Senior Mission until
1985, spanning a period of over forty years. During her tenure
as President, there were as many as thirteen circles meeting in
various homes. For more than thirty-five years, Mrs. Brown
was the Sunday School Teacher of the Intermediate Boys' Class.
She also founded and worked with the Condolence Committee
of the church, ministering to those members grieving the loss of
loved ones. Mrs. Brown was a devoted member of the West
End Baptist Church and was honored as Woman of the Year in
1992. In 1996, she was recognized for 44 years of service as
Financial Secretary of the Goodwill City-wide Missionary
Council.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her two sons, Robert, III and wife,
Lenora, of San Antonio and Charles and wife, Kay Frances
Tanner, of OTallon, IL; five grandchildren: Sharon Gavin
(Calvin), Colonel Charles Brown, Jr. (Sharene), Stephanie
Brown, Major Darrell Brown (Selena), and David Brown; six
great-grandchildren: Tiffany Thomas, Sean Brown, Ross Brown,
Jayden Brown, Victoria Brown, and Isabel Brown. Grandson
Kevin Brown preceded her in death. In addition, she is survived
by a sister, Ethel Clayborne and a host of nieces and nephews,
other relatives, and friends. Among her nieces was Barnie
Hollingsworth, San Antonio, who lived in the Brown home as a
teenager and provided assistance and support during times when
both sons and their families were serving in the Armed Forces.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the West End Baptist
Church for the Robert E. Brown, Jr. Education Center.
