Premeditated
by Dan Cameron
Curators in my position are sometimes asked why we invariably consent to get
involved with grass-roots projects like Arthouse's New American Talent. For some-
one who does not make exhibitions on a professional basis, in fact, it might be
difficult to envision the immediate benefits of an undertaking that begins with the
arduous process of reviewing several hundred artists' works in order to be able to
choose a couple dozen. Since the daunting part of that equation is not the 5% who
are selected but the 95% who are not, the happier aspects of selecting things that
one responds to positively seem outweighed by the negative karma of having to
reject the overwhelming majority of hopeful aspirants.ARTL!ES Summer 2005 45
