TAXATION.
S
A popular writer says:
"Taxation has always been the
feature of organized government,
hardest to reconcile with the peo-
ple's ideas of freedom and bappi-
ness. 'When presented in a direct
forb nothing will arouse popular
discontent more quickly and pro-
foundly than unjust and unneces-
sary taxation. Our farmers, ma-
ehanlcs, laborers and all our cit-
isens elosely scan the slightest
increase in the t xes assessed
upon their lands and other prop-
erty and demand good reasons
forsuch an Increase, And yet
they seem to be expected, in some
quarters, to regard the unneees*
sary volume or insidious and in-
direct taxation visited upon them
by oar present rate of tariff du-
ties with indifference, if not with
fcvor.
Could this t ex of 47 per cent,
be so levied tbst "our plain peo-
ple" might olearly understand
bow mush they pat and to whom
they pay it, there would be au
overturning in thie oountry that
would invele a dtffsrent system.
If a lot owner la this eity is as-
Mtstd 8 per eent. on the alue of
his lot,heolsmors to know why
the taxes ere so heavy and what
WIIO PA YS THE BILL ?
As Bald head suggested to yes-
terday's issue, the men who vot-
ed against prohibition are the
ones employing men of this city
and county.
We let the prohibition question
go, and consider for the present
the People's party and its claim
upon the votes of the working-
men, white "or colored. We would
like to ask for the information of
our readers who of the so-oalled
People's party are employing
help to any extent and what pub-
lic industry dp th«y control?
How many men are employed by
this new fungoid which claims to
deserve the Vote of the toiler—
few, very few.
Now look at the other side of
the question. Are not all of the
business enterprises of the city or
county wnere men are largely em-
ployed strictly democratic? Does
not tbe money to forward any
lOf the projects which gives our
town its lifefcome from democrats!
The colored man especialy year
after year with a laugh on his
face, votes against, the very in-
terest which gives him his bread
and meat—but with him it 1b
looked upon as a matter of
course; with white men it is dif-
ferent—they ought to know on
which side their bread is butter-
ed and they ought to know that
the perpetuation of democratic
idieas is for their beBt interests.
A time may come whan employ
ers will have to protect them-
selves and employ those who
s|ai)^by them, ond who identify
themselves with them, when that
time oomes, if it ever does, and
we would regret its advent, those
working men who are now listen-
ing to the siren song of the peo-
ples party leaders, they comtem-
plate depressed business, labor
stagnated and many men looking
for employment ean eon template
with bitterness the ruin wrought
by themselves, and cure their
own want of sngseity.
Let the people's party triumph
in their unwholjr war against es-
tablished institutions and the pro
green of tbe county would not
only be killed but its oourse
would be reversed at least twen
ty years.
Wofkingmen do you want that
state of things! If you do
vote with people's party and voa
will find that is demoerats who
to-day pay the bills.
