IN TEXAS* IN
REGARD TO THE ECLE' TIC EDUCA-
TIONAL SERIES OF SCHOOL BOOKS,
HOUSTON TEXAS.
B. Smith; E60. :—During my visit to your
city, you did me the honor to present me
with some worke of education, published under your
direction. The English Teacher, &c., by Professor
Pineo, requesting my examination al opiuioit as to
th^ir.meritSj &C. •
Permit me now to say to you, that-during the
tedium of my passage home to this place, I had am-
ple time, and received much pleasure by giving them
a thorough exaination. . ;
I can truly say, from long experience in the use
of other Grammars, I give it the preference overall
others, even to that good old work by. Lindly Marry,
which, in my collegiate cf urse, some thirty years
since, was thought to be the 'sine qua non' of per-
fection in Grammar-making. Notwithstanding the
high estimate I place upon Piueo'a Grammar, I must
take the liberty to express my opinion, though un-
asked, iii regard to McGuffy's Eclectic series ch
readers now published under your direction, whi of
I have used since their first publication.
.JJis htile Trimmer,, his- spellejy-fim reader, also
happily bilged, in words, a^ceiit of sylabies, intro-
duction of short and easy sen ten lies for exercises,
so well calculated early to habituate a correct pro-
nunciation, at the same time to secure the infantile
mind a pleasantness in effort. His readers are un-
quallcd in their adaptation to diffisrent degrees of
advancement; step lijf step the little mind's lead.on
to achieve much without prodncing despondency by
sudden transitions from the easy to the more difficult
at the same time the sentiments aro so well selected'
as to deeply impreess the infaatle mind with the
principles of virture and morality, and excite to ;a
laudable emulation. t" ' '
I confidently give my'opinion- that in every ib-
stance where McGuffe's series have-been introduced,
pupils have made better advances in correct reading
and pareuts are belter plewed.
In conclusion, allow me to express my humble
opinion as a Teacher of youth, to say, that Mr. Mc-
Guffv, by his labors oud efforts to-fq^rpve the plan of
school books, should be truly esteemed a benefactor
of his race , ,
