Log Cabin launches attack on
'federal Marriage Amendment
Group plans $1 million expenditure to place broadcast ads across country
By David Webb Staff Writer
Log Cabin Republicans unleashed a SI mil-
lion television advertising campaign this week
attacking the proposed Federal Marriage
Amendment recently endorsed by President
Bush.
The 30-second commercial, scheduled for
broadcast in cities nationwide, shows footage of
Vice President Dick Cheney from a 2000 debate
saying that the federal government should not
interfere in the relationships of people and that
states should decide such issues. Cheney is fea-
tured saying, "The fact of the matter is we live in
a free society, and freedom means freedom for
everybody."
It also shows clips of civil rights protests from
the 1960s, signs designating water fountains for
"colored" people and pictures of gay and lesbian
couples.
The commercial concludes with the message,
"We agree. Don't amend the Constitution."
The commercial will target cities in the swing
states of Ohio, Missouri, Florida, Minnesota,
New Mexico, New Hampshire and Wisconsin.
Log Cabin representatives delivered 1,000 copies
of the advertisement to key Republicans around
the country, including members of Congress,
governors and members of the Republican
National Committee.
Log Cabin Republicans executive director
Patrick Guerriero said that the "radical right
wanted a culture war," and he promised that
GLBT Republicans would deliver a powerful
defense. He said that it is "wrong" for the
Republican Party to use the Constitution to score
political points in an election year.
"I can proudly say that thousands of Log
Cabin Republicans and our allies across America
are fighting back," Guerriero said. The gay
Republican leader said the group launched the ad
campaign "because the exclusion and discrimi-
nation embodied in this amendment violates the
principles upon which the Republican Party is
founded."
Carla Halbrook of Dallas, a member of the Log Cabin
board of directors, said of the possibility that the group
would ultimately endorse Bush's re-election: "We're going
to be having some pretty serious discussions with our
attendees and chapter presidents to see how the group
feels."
Dallas resident Carla Halbrook, who is a mem-
ber of Log Cabin's national board, spoke at the
press conference in Washington on Wednesday
announcing the release of the commercial.
"The battle to defeat the Federal Marriage
Amendment will be joined by Republicans from
around our nation — conservative and moderate,
straight and gay, black and white, rich and poor,"
Halbrook said.
During an interview after returning to Dallas,
Halbrook said that she is confident that the adver-
tisement will have an impact.
"I hope it will be every effective/' said
Halbrook, who added that the advertising effort
will be accompanied by "hard lobbying."
