A fact not generally known is that Houston has
the only piano and organ manufacturing plant in
the South. It was established here in 1909 and is
now doing a good and lucrative business, the work
turned out by them being of the highest order of
excellence.
Houston's standing and importance as a manufacturing
point are well shown by the United States
Census Report. Following are the figures for
Houston, for 1909, the year when the figures were
taken by the government:

$16,594,000; cost of material used, $14,321,000;
salaries and wages, $4,254,000; miscellaneous expenses,
$1,942,000; value of products, $28,016,000;
value added by manufacture, $8,695,000; number
of salaried officers and clerks, 725; average number
of wage earners, 5888; total number of steam
laundries, 19; capital invested in laundries, $270,000;
