Allen gels classified back
By JERRY REED
In a San Diego publication there appeared one of
the best picks in the classified sections in a long
while. The ad read: For Sale one star professional
running back fully equipped power legs good hands.
The ad went on to say that the running back had only
three owners but needed work will take best offer
call Harland Savare.
George Allen coach of the Washington Redskins
answered the ad and came up with one of the best
ball carriers to come into the National Football
League in many years Duane Thomas.
This could have been the best bargain since that
dude up north sucked some Indians into to giving him
Manhattan Island for $24. Perhaps the Indians in the
nation's capital feel that they are getting at least
something back that was taken away many moons
ago.
BOYS WILL BE BOYS
Duane Thomas is not your every day run-of-the-mill
athlete. He certainly isn't a candidate for publicity on
the back of a Wheaties box and by no means could
double for Sidney Portier in "Lilies Of The Field"
should it be re-released.
Thomas was built more in the mold of Richard
Roundtree and his former teammates will agree that
he could fit the part of the actor's title role of "Shaf-
t".
Whether Thomas is tabbied as a saint or a sinner
the fact remains that he is one of the premier meal-
ticket backs in professional football. George Allen
knows this and he being the opportunist that he is
took advantage of the situation.
If Duane Thomas performs for the Skins the way
that he is capable of doing in 1973 the team just may
get to have their parking ticket validated at the
Super Bowl in January. One man does not a team
make but throw in All-Pro halfback Larry Brown
sprinkled with effective blocker Charlie Harraway
and with abit of surgery on the phrase you have a
valid statement. One backfield does a team make.
HE'S BEEN AROUND
The big question in the minds of the Washington
partisants is whether Thomas will stay in D.C. He
has come along way from Canyon Texas where he
played his college ball for West Texas State.
Even though he was overshadowed by a fellow
named Mercury Morris during his college days the
Dallas Cowboys figured he could make the big time.
In two seasons with the Pokes Thomas gained 1596
yards and was instrumental in bringing the first
world championship to Big D.
Since his departure from Dallas because of per
sonal problems it has been impossible even for Rand
McNally to map out the star running back's next
move.
It looked as though he would remain in San Diego
the team he was dealt to after juking between Dallas
and New England but like the members of the op
posite sex it is hard to predict what he will do next.
After failure to show up for training camp several
times Charger officials advertised their product and
of course did not offer a money back guarantee.
HE'LL BE OKAY
Allen has already hired Joyce Brothers to tutor
Duane and he feels that he is getting his money's
worth. This is not the first time that George has
made any s-ort of deal that may have been
questioned. Case in point the veteran team that he
has and the absence of draft choices.
Most of Allen's players should be enshrined as ar
chives in the Smithsonian Institute instead of playing
in RFK Stadium on Sundays. I doubt if he knows
what a rookie looks like. You can't really challenge
his moves because he is the Frank Lloyd Wright of
football.
One thing is for sure Allen will continue to watch
the paper for some more bargains if his latest ven
ture pays off.

proving the performance of
his car. There is no limit to
the work a person can do to
his machine whether it is a
fuel funny car or a street
car.
One of the best aspects of
racing involves street cars
used to drive back and forth
to work basically unchanged
from showroom form. There
are many classes of stockers
or street cars depending on
the car's basic weight engine
size and horsepower rating.
The Ft. Hood Dragway gives
trophies for stock classes
plus trophies and cash
awards for top stock
eliminator.
Another aspect of drag
racing is the super stock cars
with stock bodies and highly
modified engines which are
awarded with cash prizes.
Modified stock classes in
clude highly modified engines
in an altered car body. Again
cash prizes are awarded.
The E bracket class con
tains cars that do not qualify
fully for other classes thus
enabling a stock car driver
it
modification work without
having to fully modify his
car. The objective in this
class of racing is consisten
cy: Practice in time trials to
evaluate the best timed run
that a car will obtain. A per
son will try to achieve this
timed run throughout the
elimination without bettering
his time.

Dennis Brown wildlife-

many parts of Texas to the
coming hunting season.
"When range is so good
deer have to move^ |ibou%

brown. "This reduces the
hunter's chances of bagging
the deer he wants."
Brown pointed out that af

during the day and a hunter
is left in his blind without
seeing a single deer.
