Mineral Wells 7, Cleburne 21
The final high school game of the season was played at Cleburne on
Thanksgiving Day. This was the only high school game that was lost
by the Mineral Wells team. After a long ride the morning before the
game to Cleburne, the team had the hardest game of the year before
them.
To the hard luck of the heavy Mineral Wells team the field was slick
and muddy from a rain the night before, making the work of the speedy
backs a hard go.
Cleburne opened up in the beginning of the game with their famous
fake formations, which the Mineral Wells boys could not figure out at
first. In the first quarter they scored one touchdown and kicked goal.
The second quarter both Mineral Wells and Cleburne made a touchdown
each and both kicked goal. Again in the third quarter Cleburne made
their other score and kicked goal. In the last quarter Leckie and Cash
made several sensational runs for long gains but the slick field handicapped
their broken field running.
For Mineral Wells Saxon at center played a wonderful game. In the
line Brewster was able to solve most of the plays before they were formed.
Tomlinson proved himself a powerful man; Henry Carter made many good
tackles; and Lee Cornelius proved himself a linesman of good merit. In
the back field Bill Yeager was a new find tearing off several good gains.
Cash and Leckie made several runs for good gains through a broken field.
Wristen at quarter ran his team well. Line plunger by Seamster, Stoker
and Griffin helped the team. Brewster and Griffin were the best punters
of the day.
The final score ended with Mineral Wells 7 and Cleburne 21.
Mineral Wells 0, Southern Methodist University 77
Since we were unable to get a game with any high school team in
this part of the State, we brought the S. M. U. ineligibles to Mineral
Wells for a game. The team was composed of old college stars that had
transferred from other colleges to S. M. U. Among them being Rowso
of T. C. U., all T. I. A. A. half back; Huff, an all-Eastern full back; and
Bedford of Center College who scored the touchdown against Harvard
in 1920. Being of college strength they easily piled up 77 points against
Mineral Wells High, which was a smaller score than they had piled up
against other high schools and academies over the State. Until that game
they were not scored upon by any team and having only one gain of first
down against them, which is a wonderful record.l c22 ,
