Review of the Football Season
Football season started off with a drive on the afternoon of Septem-
ber 3. From the beginning thirty men reported for practice regularly.
After one week's work the squad increased to over forty men.
Led by the big Field Captain Horace Brewster, who was acting for
the injured Captain Coon, the team whipped into shape fast under the
careful coaching of E. C. I razier, a star athlete from Baylor University.
Before this year the team had not been under the supervision of a real
athletic coach, but now under the able supervisor the team gave promise
of being a real contender for championship honors.
The season opened with a victory over Strawn which gave us the
county championship. Our next victory was over the undefeated Decatur
team, followed by one over Junior High of Fort Worth. The Senior High
boys of Fort Worth came over to make their claim for district champions
stronger, but went back sadder but wiser. The last but strongest team
from For Worth came over and we played them a scoreless tie. This was
the best game of football ever played in Mineral Wells during its history
of football. North Side then drew the chance to play Electra for the
championship of this district at Wichita Falls. If North Side had won we
would have played them another game to settle the title; but to our sor-
row, Electra won by one point. That left us out of the race wihout being
defeated by a high school team. The rest of the season we played any
team within our reach that wanted a game. The heavy Weatherford
College team turned the tables on us, giving us the first defeat. Following
this we played the S. M. U. team of ineligibles but veterans from Dallas.
They were of a stronger calibre than most college teams in the conference.
Our last game of the season was with the strong Cleburne team at Cle-
burne where we met our first defeat in the hands of a high school.
With the new material on hand at the first of the season that ended
with such good record for a whole season is worthy of note. Horace
Brewster was one of the best linemen in the State circles; Mann Tomlin-
son, Henry Carter, Luther Carter, and Lee Cornelius made him good team
mates. In the back field Leckie was the star of every game he played.
Griffin, Cash, Seamster, Stoker and Yeager were always dependable.
Both Wristen and Braswell Dickinson were good at quarter position, as-
sisted by O. E. Dickinson. At the wing positions, Webb, Cooksey, and
Ledbetter played well the whole season. A. J. Saxon was one of the best
centers in high school circles. B. W. McMeen will make a good man next
season, with experience and added weight.
Much credit is due "Mule" Frazier, one of the best coaches in the
State, for the wonderful success of the team. Without a good coach, good
material cannot be developed into a success. He has always put good
sportsmanship and clean living before the men at all times.
