indications Are
That Swden Soon
Will Join in Pact
Against Commies
COPENHAGEN. Denmark, Feb.
28. (AP) —Denmark appeared
lined up firmly with the West in
the cold war today, and there
were indications that Sweden, too.
is leaning in that direction.
Denmark's position on the North
Atlantic defense pact—proposed
western military alliance against
Russian expansion — "was made
clear yesterday when the coun-
try's largest political party, the
Social Democrats, decided to look
io die West for security.
Sweden to Join Soon
Meanwhile high diplomatic
sources in Sweden, traditionally
pcutial key nation of the North
Scandinavian bloc, predicted that
Sweden will join the projected
North. Atlantic agreement within
six months. One informed source
said "sooner, if the Russians make
any move toward Finland."
_ Norway, the other Scandinavian
country, already has turned to the
. 4Vest for her military security.
Norway said an all-Scandinavian
defense arrangement with no links
to the West, as proposed some
^inie ago by Sweden, would not
he strong enough to make her feel
secure. t
v Previously Reluctant
Norway, Sweden and Denmark
had accepted economic ties with
the West in the Marshall plan.
Until recently, however, they had
been reluctant to forge any mili-
tary links for fea,r of Russian re-
atcioii. AH* are within easy range
of Soviet forces. Norway has a
•far northern common border with
the Soviet and Denmark is 10
minutes flight from Russian air
bases. Sweden borders on Fin-
land, tightly tied by treaty to the
