"Private diaries, family letters. j journals of
travel. ,1(1 newspapers. genealog.ical notices,
etc.. etc.. are of quite as much value in re-
coverin g the history of lexas as are State
papers and public documents." These words
could well have been used hlv Iroftessor
\Walter 1'. Wehlhl as he issued the first number
of the .lunior lisoriai in January, I 94I.

of the Quarly'rv/ of tht' IT-as Statt' Historical
.ssoci ttio in July, 1897. At that time (;ov-

A.ssociati(n, and o n the Executive Council
were such \well-known Texans as G'overnor
F. R. Lubbock, (yuv M. Bryan, 1)udlev (.
Wooten, William Corner, MIrs. Julia Lee
Sinks, Z. T1. lulmore, and C. M. Raines. The
studylv of exas history, the collection of his-
torical materials, and the proper utilization
of these materials in historical research were
placed on a firm basis by these early his-
torians.
These lovers of Texas and of Texas his-tory had the same approach as we have today;
their rnl)itions are our ambitions ; their
ideals, our ideals. They took the long view:
we must do likewise. They organized the
Texas State Historical Association. They be-
gan the publication of the Quarlterly or the
Te.tas State Historical A4ssocialion ( now called
the Son/lhwestern H historical Quarterly, ). which
is the greatest of all storehouses of Texas
history.
O)ur historical ancestors wrought well. It
is our good fortune as well as our patriotic
duty to carry on and to add to the work
which they began. And above all, we must
cherish and uphold the form of government,
the idals of integrity, and the standards of
conduct which they have bequeathed to us as
a heritage. The year 1947 marked the fiftieth
anniversary of the founding of the Texas
State Hlistorical Association. The Junior His-
torian movement, which began in Texas, is
only nine years old. Many Junior Historians
of today will live to see the ftiftieth anniver-
sarv c f this junior organization. It can be
safely predicted that its accomplishments will
he outstanding.
