The 1925 All-Female
Supreme Court
By James R. Evans Jr. 12
The Supreme Court of Texas was male
dominated through the 1980s -- except
for one exception. In 1925, an all-female,
three-justice court heard and decided
one case, delivered three opinions,
and then stepped down. It would
be 57 years before another women joined
the Texas Supreme Court.
The Semi-Colon Court
of Texas
By Michael (Monty) Watson 16
In 1873, the Texas Supreme Court's
opinion about the meaning of a semicolon
almost sparked armed conflict between
the state's Democrats and Republicans.
The landmark decision in Ex
Parte Rodriguez lead to a blanket condemnation
of the Semi-Colon Court
and its decisions as a whole.
Organizations Formed to Help
Preserve Texas Legal History
By Angela Dorau 19
Several groups, including the Texas
Historical Foundation Legal Preservation
Trust (see page 15), have been
formed in order to help protect precious
pieces of Texas legal history that are
quickly disappearing.Of Soldiers, Racism, and Mutiny
The 1917 Camp Logan Riot
By Angela Armendariz Dorau 6
The mutiny, riot, and subsequent hangings
of 19 black soldiers stationed at Houston's
Camp Logan in 1917 is an ugly mark in
Texas history. The executions took place
without appeal or review, before the verdicts
were divulged to the outside world.ON THE COVER
