Community History Seminar
Planned in Arlington
The University of Texas at Arlington
will present a symposium, "Exploring
Community History," on Saturday, October
15.
The session will cover techniques for
accessing historical resources, including
archives, material culture, and oral history.
Texas historian A.C. Greene will provide
an overview, and eight historians
representing historical organizations and
universities will serve as presenters.

Commission Releases Video
The Texas Historical Commission announces
the release of a 20-minute video

entitled "In the Interest of Texas History:
The THC and Its Programs". The video is
available for loan to community organizations
interested in the activities and programs
of the agency. Limited copies are
available, so groups and individuals are
urged to plan ahead.

State Cemetery Gets Facelift
Thanks to the hard work and effort of
Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock and the
staffs of several state agencies, the Texas
State Cemetery in Austin is undergoing
restoration and preservation work that is
designed to elevate the grounds to a place
of pride.
A Texas Department of Transportation
crew recently resurfaced the roads, and
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is
working with the General Services and
Historical Commissions to draw up a master
plan.
The cemetery, located at East Seventh
and Comal Streets, is the final resting place
of Stephen F. Austin, 11 Texas governors,
1,500 Confederate soldiers, and numerous
famous Texas writers.
David DeBoe Honored For
Historical Preservation Work
Dr. David DeBoe, director of educational
services at the Texas State Historical Association
in Austin, was recently selected
by the Texas Historical Commission as
recipient of the 1994 Governor's Award for
Historic Preservation.
DeBoe, coordinator of the popular Junior
Historians of Texas program, also
oversees the annual Teacher History
Awareness workshop, which offers sessions
on diverse topics designed to inspire and
assist teachers.
DeBoe also coordinates The Institute of
Texas Studies, which is held each year in
Austin on the campus of the University of
Texas.

Call For Proposals Issued
The Beaumont History Conference has
issued a call for proposals for papers related
to Beaumont and Southeast Texas history
by both professional and lay historians.
The papers should be based on original
research and prepared for 20-minute oral
presentations.
The conference is scheduled for January
1995, and deadline for proposals is midAugust
1994. Those interested in presenting
a proposal should contact Judith Linsley,

Noteworthy Exhibits
Planned Around the State
* The Old Jail Art Center in Albany is
exhibiting the William Ernest Chilton Jr.
collection of maps from June 4 through
September 4. The exhibition examines the
art of cartography and the historical significance
of original maps by looking at 18th
and 19th century maps of Texas, Mexico,
and the United States. Contact the Center

* The Texas Maritime Museum in
Rockport has opened an exhibition entitled,
"The Texas Coast and the Civil
War". It will continue through April 1995.

Vacation Opportunities
Three of Galveston's premier historic
attractions have teamed up to offer summer
