MARATHON, TEXAS
Persimmon Gap, Stillwell's Crossing, Black Gap, Dead Horse,
Santiago Peak, and the Chalk are not only sites in Brewster County,
they are also the names of the Gage's downstairs guest rooms. The
furnishings are right in keeping with the hotel, with an 1840 German
pine ped and an 1860 four-poster. All rooms have a ceiling fan and a
wash basin. A few rooms share a bath, but the most modern conveniences
are just a few steps down the hall.
The lobby still has the original front desk and key box, but the old
mailboxes were taken from the post office in Alpine when it used to
be known as Murphysville. For some reason the lobby fireplace was
a fake one and could never be used, and it is still that way now. On
one wall is a magnificent antique cabinet that looks as though it came
from a Spanish hacienda, but actually it came from the Gage Inn in
England. Just off the lobby is the washroom just as it functioned in
1927. That is all it was-a wash room-with nothing in it but a wash
basin. The wooden telephone booth in the corner is a copy of the one
that has long since been removed and lost.
The dining room's emphasis is on traditional fare. It features huge
steaks, hamburgers, lamb chops, broiled quail, and a special grilled
cheese sandwich with bacon and jalapefios. Breakfast offers sour
dough biscuits and the lunch menu is the same as the dinner menu.
A small bar called the Watering Trough is in the basement.
The Gage is a perfect overnight or weekend stopover when you are
traveling through or on your way to the Big Bend.
