village known as the Vinson Site in Limestone
County near Mexia. It is one of the
few recorded remaining historic Indian
archaeological sites in Texas.
Gulf States Utilities Company received
the Josiah Wheat Award of Merit for outstanding achievement in historic preservation
by an industry. Gulf States Utilities
has built a large new office building, but
preserved the 1920s brick Travis Street
substation which is on the site, then restored
it and established the Edison Plaza
Museum. The museum contains the largestcollection of Thomas A. Edison inventions
west of the Mississippi River and is
one of two electric industry museums in the
United States.
The late W. Donham Crawford, former
CEO of Gulf States Utilities, revered
Edison and began collecting his inventions.
The museum focuses on Edison's
work and shows how the electric industry
has expanded on those inventions to improve
our quality of life. Jill Street, curator
of the museum, accepted the award on
behalf of Gulf States Utilities Company.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times received
a Citation of Merit for stories and
photographs of local history carried in the
Caller-Times throughout 1988. Articles
included several categories: historical
markers, historic preservation, history
appreciation, and Texas biographies.

Jim Davis of Harte-Hanks News Bureau
in Austin accepted the award on behalf of
Caller-Times editor Larry Rose.
Another Citation of Merit was presented
to the Four Seasons Nursing Center,
Austin for their hours of volunteer
work assisting in the Texas Historical
Foundation mailings. Our Center volunteers
worked long hours coding, stuffing
and mailing membership solicitation materials.
Their volunteer labor has contributed
greatly to the overall success of the
membership campaign for 1988-1989.
Mary Helen Fitts, of the Four Seasons
Nursing Center, accepted the award on
behalf of the volunteers.
The vision and firmness of purpose of
our award winners, and others like them,
provides the leadership essential for preservation
efforts. Their example also
teaches a fundamental lesson: vision consists
not only in looking to the future, but
also in looking with reverence to the past.
