and the Longhorns duke it out in Texas
Stadium this coming fall. "The state of
Texas has one of the richest histories in the

Regional chauvinism aside, the atlases
are a nice contribution to the geographic
literature, especially as introductions for
elementary and secondary school use. As a
Kansan, I could invoke my own regional
pride and note that the Kansas atlas is the
better of the two, but in fairness I would
have to add that it is a second edition and
the author's have had the opportunity to
revise and update their work. The atlas on
Texas is fresh off the press. Even so, the
Kansas atlas is a more substantial volume,
with 10 more maps and many interesting
thematic maps such as one comparing bison
ranges throughout the Plains from the
1830s to the 1870s. There are maps of
cattle trails and cattle towns, railroad
development, ghost colleges and universities
along with another for those colleges
and universities that succeeded, and historical
trails as well as military battles. The
Texas atlas is more historically oriented
