FROM THE EDITOR
In early 1984, the Texas Historical
Foundation worked to compile a book
of old photographs acquired from public
and private collections around the
state. These photos were published by
Texas Monthly Press as Historic Texas:
A Photographic Portrait. It could never
have been accomplished without the
support of the Du Pont Company and
Conoco, its energy subsidiary.
This project was a collaborative effort
with staff members at the collections
we consulted, private photographers,
and many individuals including
Martha Sandweiss of the Amon Carter
Museum, who served as general editor.
The images presented were carefully
chosen by a committee to document
and celebrate our Texas history. This
project reflects our commitment to excellence
and the quality of life.
Last July the Board of Directors of
the Texas Historical Foundation voted
to merge with the Center for Historic
Resources at Texas A&M University.
The Center had then been in existence
for less than a year, but had already been
identified as the focus of efforts to preserve
the built environment in Texas.
An important part of the Center's
programs is to seek and collect documentation
on our built environment. A
repository has been established containing
collections of photos, oral histories,
architectural drawings and records
of businesses involved in construction.
Old photograph albums often contain
important evidence of how towns,
homes, and other structures appeared in
an earlier era. There are people in every
community who played significant
parts in creating the built environment-builders,
architects, planners or
political figures. Their contributionsdeserve to be recorded. They may have
files or recollections to add to this body
of information for use by preservationists,
historians, students, and those interested
in preserving our heritage.
This is an excellent opportunity for
Foundation members or anyone interested
in Texas history to participate in a
concerted effort to collect and preserve
the recorded history of our state. Many
familiar landmarks and structures are
disappearing from view. And, like tearing
pages out of an old book, how will
our children know the complete story?
Change is a natural process, but not
always "progress." The natural face of
Texas may well be altered forever with
the individual deaths of old buildings
and the natural environment that many
of us grew up with.
Hopefully, the new repository at the
Center for Historic Resources will
stimulate a broader interest in our history
and the resources we are losing. If
you have information, old letters, photographs
or documents and would like
to consider making a contribution, call
Joan Rabins at the Center today (409)
845-0384. Together we can make the
difference for generations to ome!
