THE NAVEL OF THE WORLD
Thou art the navel of the world so
the old merchant in Thomas Manns
Btory of Joseph in Egypt misquotes
Joseph as having said Joseph tried to
explain to the old man that what he
had meant to say was Jhat each man
was the center of the world But to the
old man It all meant the came and to
him it was blasphemy to assert that tho
world could be centered in every gawk
that camo along
Thero Is an apparent truth in thia
Idea that every man is the center of
the world for all of us see the world
from where we are Many Interpret the
world as being what It does to us there-
fore for some the world is beautiful for
some it Is ugly for some it Is cruel
and for some It is kind We Interpret
the world In these yarkmsyways because
we have beerfat a center in which these
things havehappened to us
Bnt can thefcworld be centeredHn
