It must bn conceded now, more tban
ever, as a mining creed that there are
certain relations between rocks and
minerals, as there are between trees and
their fruits. No one can find coal in
granite or porphry. Those Interested in
mining should make a study of these
hints. All the Silurian dolomites uplifted
by eruptive or intrusive porphry are
impregnated with ores of the precious
metals and much more so when these
dykes of porphry in contact with lime
rocks are altered to clays or talc by
nature's chemical mysteries. We notice
this nearly in every instance
where ore is abundant. One of
the largest deposits in the
mineral kingdom, two hundred miles
south of £1 Paso, at Santa Eulalia, is an
instance. Northwest of this city Kingi-
ton is another, and there are so many
such instances that we could tire in their
mention. The mountains in the vicinity
of Organ have been prospected for the
past six years, but pay had not been
taken from them until the said combina
tion of rocks was found and ore fol
lowed.
If we consider that for a radius of two
hundred miles El Paso lies in a basin
whereby porphyritic eruptions all its
surrounding ranges have been uplifted
and the Silurian rocks exposed along the
slopes, we must believe that Humboldt
was right when a century ago he predict
ed that this must be the future Eldorado
of mining.
It is entirely within our power to
hasten the realization of this prophesy.
Our miners do not eat up profits in drain
ing shafts [or timbering falling walls.
We can work in this climate the whole
year around without interruption. These
natural advantages co operate with our
efforts of development and the time is
not far distant when being understood
the world will say: Humboldt was
right. J. C. C
OUR MINING OUTLOOK.
Ppccial Correspondence El Paso Times.
The famous prophesy or Baron Von
Humboldt that southern New ilexico and
Arizona would become the mining Eldo-
rado of the future, as yet has not been
fully verified, and it is the opinion of
some mining men that there are no pay-
ore bodies in thiB district and they ralher
prefer to invest in mining ventures of
cold Montana, Idaho or old Nevada than
to put money in these yet virgin moun-
tains of the Mexican frontier.
To be sure, mines are like men, often
they are made by circumstances. It was
after twenty years of long arduous toil,
of indifferent results and discouraging
disappointments that a man came along
California gnlch and with the magic
power of his knowledge discovered the
carbonate deposits that made Leadville.
Had A. B. Wood not been in California
gnlch the chances are that Leadville
would not be known to-day; as bad not
Columbus gone to Spain to see the queen
very probably the United States would
not exist.
Thus in many instances the man of
knowledge and pluck converts a lonely
and deserted spot into a coruncopia of
gold and silver.
We have visited many of the hills and
mountains of this region and from south
around in a circuit to south again, we
have seen ore, good and in paying quan
tities. Magdalena, Montezuma, Sabinal,
Corralitos, Victorio, Shakespeare, Stein's
Pass, Silver City, Kingston, Chloride,
Organ, Jarillas, Carrizo, and so on form
a quasi perfect circle, the centre of which
is El Paso—a circle as rich as the iron
crown which the European emperors in
times past wore on the days of corona-
tion, a cluster of jewels, sapbires and
diamonds imprisoned with a golden band
lined with a little iron, said to be from
one of the spikes that nailed Christ to the
cross in tbe act of the world'B redemp-
tion.
We must note here that our circle
of minerals is not as full on the east as
it is on the north, south and west. This
is due partially to geographical reasous,
but more so to the poor mining laws of
Texas, in the interest of which we hope
they may be entirely revoked and thor-
oughly forgotten.
In spite of having so many good mines
within so small an area, the country is
far, as yet, from being geographically
understood by the mining class. The
government bas not taken the same in-
terest here that it has displayed in Vir-
ginia City, in Colorado, and other places,
and United States geological surveys of
the west are, in the vicinity of El Paso,
like the Arabian phoenix, which every-
body knows to exist, but no one knows
where. •
It ia true that luck alone can find
mine, but knowledge of geol-
ogy and mineralogy goes a
a greater way to make good a mining
country. Poor must that business be
which entirely depends upon lock. There

How They Remember Their Partners.
I have often wondered how gentlemen
remembered ludies to whom they had just
been introduced nt balls when hunting
them up to dance. I picked up a pro-
gramme from the floor at tho charity ball
which gave some light. The gentleman
had put beside the name of each stranger
u word suggesting something distinguish-
ing in her toilette. But better was the
programme of a gentleman who is visit
ing St. Paul, which I saw. He sketches
readily and had drawn the profllo of one
lady, a diamond star which blazed at the
neck of another, eye glasses for a third
and so on. A stroke or two as he moved
away and the fair lady was stamped upon
his memory—rather his programme.—
