to tell me what was wrong. Things began to dry up
and presently they told me their story.
They had come to St. Petersburg to bask in its
winter warmth. \\hile living in this little cottage they
made the casual acquaintance of three men. During a
conversation with them one (lay, the husband said he
and his wife liked Florida so well that they figured on
buying a little home in the center of an orange grov-e.
One of the men spoke up and declared himself a "realtor"
as the real estate men now term themselves. He
said if they were interested in St. Petersburg property
he had the exact place they wanted.
"I am the agent for the property," and indicating
one of the other two men with him, "this gentleman
owns it."
The old couple, whose name was Bockerman, went
the next day to view the new estate. It consisted of
several acres under cultivation and a charming bungalow.
The orange grove appealed to them as its fragrant
blossoms would renew in the autumn of life, a honleymoon
in springs gone by.
They were very happy.
The price was set at ten thousand dollars. This
was a sum far less than it would have commanded in
the hands of genuine real estate operators.
The old people did not know this, and no doubt
considered themselves fortunate at securing such a perfect
home. The deal was agreed upon.
The property owner, so the "agent" said, required
the money in cash over the board.
This met with the approval of the Bockermans. It
was decided to transfer the money and close the deal in
a bank in Clearwater, the county seat.
In line with this arrangement, the Bockermans had
instructed their bank in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, to
transfer their savings account to the Clearwater institution.
