TEXAS.
AUSPICIOus to the interests of humanity-to the extension
of liberty, of knowledge, and of liberal principles,
was the establishment of a Colony in Texas by
Stephen F. Austin, in 1821-2. It was establishing the
Anglo-American race one remove farther to the South
and West, in the then all but impassable barrier between
the civilized and free States of the North and
the remains of despotism and barbarism of the Southin
a land then a wilderness, and the home of the savage,
but now redeemed and free-a land of the orange, the
fig, and the vine; the Italy of America, where de.
lightful breezes "blow soft," where "every prospect
pleases," and where Nature has bestowed her riches and
her beauties with a lavish hand-a land towards which,
as towards the Italy of the old world, the hardy people
of the North are pouring in a ceaseless tide of emigration,
and where is destined to be a great, wealthy, and
powerful nation.
