onerous duties imposed upon the rest of the people of
Mexico. This state of things continued down to the
affair of Edwards at Nacogdoches in 1827. This ex.
cited a good deal of attention, and has been more generally
known and spoken of, because supposed by many
to have been an extensive plot for the subjugation of
all Mexico, with which, it has been asserted, the celebrated
Aaron Burr was leagued. The history of this,
so far as known, is as follows: Edwards, as Empresario,
had obtained from the Mexican Government the
right of colonizing a portion of country around and
including Nacogdoches. Either not understanding, or
disposed to pervert to his own interests the laws under
which he obtained his right or grant, he represented
to his Colonists that he held the lands within the limits
of that grant in fee simple, and had a right to sell the
same, and accordingly charged the Colonists a certain
sum per acre for their land. This they soon found to
be an imposition, and resolved not to submit to it.
They petitioned the Government for redress, whereupon
the grant to Edwards was revoked. Thinking this
act of the Government oppressive, Edwards raised the
standard of revolt, and invited the neighboring Indians
to join him. The Government, upon information of
this, sent a force to put him down. The Colonists of
Western Texas, opposed to the movement of Edwards,
joined this force, whereupon Edwards, finding himself
unsustained, abandoned the country.
