sion." The majority of the people of Texas were for
uniting with those of Coahuila in devising some plan for a
constitutional re-organization of the State Government;
and the rather, as they knew this to be the earnest desire
of Austin, who had, moreover, by this time informed
them that the General Government had at length " remedied
the evils complained of in Texas, and which threatened
it with ruin," and that Santa Anna was friendly
to Texas. But the intelligent separatists knew very
well that the evils remedied were only of minor importance;
that the great object of the mission of Austin to
Mexico had not been accomplished; that anarchy prevailed
at home, for which they could expect no remedy
from the General Government, itself in anarchy; and they
too well appreciated the character of Santa Anna to
rely upon his promises. That they should view things
somewhat differently from Austin, was to be expected;
he was a prisoner, subject to the will of a despot;
they were yet free, and, confident of strength, resolved to
remain so. They therefore advised that " Texas should
immediately organize and save herself from impending
ruin;" that she should "hazard nothing, neither by pe.
titions, which might not be answered, nor by requests,
which had been made; but promptly adopt a prudent
and least exceptionable course, hazarding as little to the
action of the General Government as possible; that as
Coahuila had withdrawn herself from Texas by her own
willing and unlawful act, Texas should abandon her to
her fate; that Texas, in so doing, would assume a position
of which neither the General, nor any other Government,
could complain."
