CHAPTER V.
Tuvs the Rubicon was passed; the war was begun.
The people ofWestern Texas now resolved to carry
that war upon the frontier, and drive every Mexican
beyond the Rio Grande. They devoutly believed that
the time had arrived when every good citizen should
shoulder his rifle and fight for his country. They desired
peace, and had avoided war; but the storm being
now inevitable, they were prepared to meet it, and
they said, " Let it come." The roads were thronged
with citizens hurrying to the West to join the standard
of their country, with the now unanimous cry,
" My country, right or wrong !" Despatches were sent
to the different municipalities in Eastern Texas, calling
upon the people there to come to the rescue. In
consequence of which, the Committees at Nacogdoches
and San Augustine met and passed resolutions to raise
and organize forces, and appointed their distinguished
fellow-citizen, Samuel Houston, General of Department.
This great man, not inexperienced in the evils
of war, and contemplating the appalling odds of the
conflict into which Texas had launched, lamented it
as premature; yet as the die was cast, in full confidence
of ultimate success, he issued a proclamation,
calling on his fellow.citizens to gather around the
standard of their country; informing them that the
