now, at the close of the campaign at Bexar, under con.
sideration the calling a Convention of the people. This
was at the instance of Gen. Austin, who had arrived at
San Felippe on the 29th inst. and had advised the calling
of a Convention for reasons which will presently
appear.
Though the late achievements of the Texan arms
had been signal and vast, considering the odds opposed,
though the political and moral effect of those
achievements was about to be as salutary as they had
been brilliant; to inspire confidence at home, as well
as admiration abroad; yet it was evident that the work
which the people of Texas had taken in hand was but
begun; that one act only of her tragedy had been per.
formed; and that others of great, if not of fearful inter.
est, were about to be evolved. At this time had been
published in Texas the decree of the General Congress
of Mexico of the 3d of October, which had put an end
to the Federal system. Before this, the people of
Texas had known only that the Central party was in
power in Mexico, and that the obvious tendency of its,acts
was the establishment of a Central Military Government.
Now it was known, and published to the
world, that the Federal Government and Constitution
were, in effect, annihilated. What course, therefore,
should the people of Texas now pursue? Should they
battle alone for the re.establishment of the Federal Con.
stitution and Government, after almost every voice in
their favor had been silenced in Mexico ? It were an
hopeless undertaking. Should they consent to hang a re.
mote territorial appendage to the Central Government,
governed by a " military officer and a bishop ?" Impossi.
