which occasion one munificent individual subscribed
five thousand dollars. On the 25th December, the chivalrous
Fannin, who had already gained laurels, and a
name, enviable in Texas, had the satisfaction of greeting
his countrymen and fellow.citizens of the Georgia
volunteers, rejoicing that the question, "Where are
your Georgia volunteers ?" was at length answered by
"the shrill sound of the fife, the soul-stirring beat of
the drum, and the flash of the bright sun on the rifles"
of the Georgia battalion.
About the same time a company of volunteers, of the
most respectable families of Alabama, was enrolled at
Courtland in that State, and marched for Texas under
the command of Dr. Shackleford. On the eve of their
departure, assembled amidst a large concourse of their
fellow-citizens, they were addressed in a manner of
pathos and feeling interest, which left not a dry eye
in the assembly; the blessing of Heaven was implored
on them and the cause in which they had embarked, and
they left with benedictions and amidst cheers choked
with sobs. A more disinterested, ivalrous set of men
never took up arms to relieve the oppressed. They
landed on the coast of Texas at the most inclement
season of the year, where no provisions could be found;
they subsisted two weeks upon game alone-a part of
the time even upon wolves-and then, when opportunity
offered, proffered their services to the Government
of Texas, to assist in the defence of its soil, if they
were needed-if not, they were prepared to depart as
they came, at their own expense.
