April (San Jacinto Day), both of which patriotic
measures received the Doctor's cordial support.
With the expiration of his term as senator Dr.
Westfall gave up public affairs altogether and
turned his attention strictly to his professional and
business interests, which by that time had assumed
very gratifying proportions, gradually placing him
in a position where he could find wider fields for
active and profitable employment. He had moved
from Williamson County to Austin in 1876. From
Austin he moved to Burnet in 1879, having made
investments in the latter place which necessitated
this step. For a year or so after going to Burnet
he was interested in the mercantile and exchange
business there; but, disposing of his mercantile interest
later, he engaged in the banking business,
associating with himself for this purpose his sonin-law,
W. H. Hotchkiss, the bank, a private institution,
being opened under the firm name of W. H.
