All who have travelled on the Mississippi have
doubtless seen something of a very pleasant game at
cards called " poker!' and perhaps many who will
read this have "suffered" occasionally in their efforts
to initiate themselves into its mysteries. The game
I believp originated on the Mississippi at least the
monarch of rivers claims it and you rarely make the
trip from New Orleans to St. Louis or Cincinnati
without seeing almost every day and night three or
four poker parties in the gentlemen's cabin to say
nothing of divers choice coteries among tho "deckers."
Coming up a month since upon one of those mag-
nificent floating palaces that navigate that great high-
way of sand and water it was my fortune to find my-
self one of about four hundred pissengers the bulk of
whom were discharged soldiers returning from the
campaign in Mexico. Some of the boys were flush
as the saying is hiving hoarded up their pay for a
splurge at home; and as it would be out of the ques-
tion for a soldier to let his money remain in his belt
or forego a chance lo double or loseit at gaming some
haif dozen games were constantly in full blast. For
the first two days our heroes had the fun all to them-
selves but soon after leaving Memphis one of the par-

player who said "he knew vary little about the game
but didn't mind losing a few dimes uy way of passing
the time pleasantly."
This acquisition wasannnot about fifty-live spare
with bhek hair and eyes a very pale face and a verv
white neckcloth and at first sight looked very much
like a Tennessee Methodist preacher. The first night
he played very badly. The cards didn't seem to run
in his favor and when he held a good hand he was
sure to be very much acttated and always "spiled"
it as he very emphatically expressed it. And he was
very particular in urging upon the other players tlm
propriety of playing "on the square" he always did
it and he never played at a table where there was a
"sporting man" ef he knew it.
After breakfast ncct morning the tfards were again
brought out and our soldier friends pleased at their
good luck the night before invited the geiitleman who
so scrupulously played on the square to take a hand.
"Old Innocence" as he was afterwards called re-
luctantlv allowed himself to be drawn into the game
and at dinnertime he was slightly w inner.
After dinner the game was renewed ana the strange
gentleman had extraordinary luck lie held "three
white aces" so otlen that the soldiers who were all
bleedinc orctlv handsumelv began to think he hail
some snrt of influence over papers; for certainly a
man who was so very scrupulous and always msntett
' on a good shuffle" and a " cut" would not attempt
tn cheat them. The game went on bravely till sup-
per and after that was over was renewed with in-
creased interest. One after one the soldiers were
victimized and left; but others supplied their places
to follow in their bad luck. One little fellow whose
stature would never gun him admittance into tho lino
during a peace establishment. Ind lost an hundred and
thirty dollars and was nervously rattling his pile some
fifteen or twenty dollars still hoping to win back his
cash.
About 10 o'clock a heavy rain began to fill and the
passengers flocked into the cabin and surrounded the
tables. Among tiiese were a couple of olhcers in citi-
7en's dres. who stood behind Old Innocence looking
upon the play with apparent indifference. At lenmh.
one of them proposed to play a few hands for the littlo
soldier who had been so hard a suliercr uhicli was
agreed to by the crowd Several deals pissed wittiojt
any betting of consequence when Old liitiocc-o
ventured a hill". The officer whom we call .ones
went back a V which was met by Old Innocence an3
an X better This exhausted the little soldier's pile
! but Jone-i pulling out his purse lent hw banker a
couple ol eagles and went them over all tiie time
keeping his eyes fixed upon hn opponent's hind.
The old fellow proved grit and met the sum and
came back another twenty.
The excitement that had been gradually rising with
the beis now began to exhibit itself in xarious vvas.
The little soldier who had 6een Old Innocence's hand
wanted to get a peep at ones' but the latter refused
saying he might betray him. Everybody seemed in-
terested in favor of Jones but all had their misgivings:
for the old man" luck seemed too strong to be belt
besides he hid shown his cards lo several ot the by-
standers. Jones kept his face and after hesitating a
minute still keeping his eye upon his neighbor's hand
forked up the requisite twenty and called.
" Full hand" responded Old Innocence" three
aces and two fives; and he carefully exhibited the pa-
pers. " Won't do" said Jones raking down the dmero
" let's look at your other card !"
The old centleman bean to grow nervons and de
manded a sight; but .ones rather abruptly caught his
hand and exposed an additional card that had been
carefully covered by an ice.
"Six cards!" cried the bystanders; "I thought
he had extraordinary luck said one; "and that hand-
kerchief on his lap "looked suspicious to me" said
another.
" He dealt 'em himself" said Old Innocence "and
I claim the money."
Jonesxery coolly reached across the table and
pulled a king out of the old gentleman's waistcoat.
In a moment more a reasonably heavy chair though
wielded by the little soldier came down rather vig-
orously on the head of Old Innocence and he went
sprawling amid the tobacco juice upon the floor.
The old fellow was then raised to his feet and a
committee very quietly relieved bis well-lilled pock-
ets returning their losses to the soldiers and dividing
the surplus in like manner. In a moment after
three taprof the bell announced that the boat was ap-
proaching a wood-yard and in five minutes more she
moved off leaving Old Innocence sitting upon a cotton-wood
log in as pretty a rain storm as ever drench-
ed a man "who played on the square1"
