of the state after supplying Texas markets. Some
wheat, however, does go from Texas to the milling
centers of the Great Lakes. Texas grows her own
wheat supply with a large surplus, and Denton County
has her share in this record.
The climate of the Denton habitat fits in splendidly
with the cultivation of winter wheat. The climate of
Denton County may be classed as the East Margin of
the Continent in Lower Middle Latitude. Being in
the western part of this type, it is in a transition area
between the humid and the drier parts of the state.
Certainly the Denton area possesses mesothermal char-
acteristics, the microthermal region (see glossary) be-
ing considerably north of this portion of Texas. The
winters in north central Texas are cold, and freezing
weather sometimes occurs, but for only a short duration,
and at noon time on the coldest days the thermometer
nearly always registers several degrees above the freez-
ing point. Seldom does the ground freeze and then for
only a slight depth. The fact is, it would be better for
the health of the people and for the mesothermal plants
if freezes were not so infrequent. Precipitation in the
form of snow is classed as unusual. January on the av-
erage is the coldest month, with a mean of about forty-
five degrees F. In a mesothermal type of climate there
may or may not be a pronounced season of drought.
The rainfall record shows a good distribution through-
