After Japan invaded the Philippines in 1941, when she was 14-years-old, the Japanese invaded her hometown of Manila and imprisoned her and her family in the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. They lived and worked in the camp until their liberation in February of 1945. They returned to live and work in the US in 1945.
