Description

A leaf displaying the month of November from a liturgical calendar within a Latin Book of Hours. The text indicates so-called "Red Letter" days. This particular Book of Hours was designated use of Sarum (i.e. Salisbury Cathedral) and was bound in France or The Netherlands in the 14th-century most likely for the English Market. Of particular interest is the appearance of "Euduardi Regis" referencing King Edward the III of England [1312-1377].

Description

A leaf displaying the month of November from a liturgical calendar within a Latin Book of Hours. The text indicates so-called "Red Letter" days. 1 leaf ([1] p.) ; 14 x 10 cm.

Notes

Edward III was born on 13 November 1312; he was King of England from 1327 until his death in 1377. Edward is notable in his declaration of himself as the rightful heir to the French throne in 1337, thus beginning the Hundred Years' War.

A teaching collection, purchased in 2018, of 37 leaves from illuminated manuscripts, 36 of which are on vellum/parchment, and one on paper. Disbound, each leaf in mylar enclosure, the whole housed in custom clam-shell with off-white cloth covering.
