5The Ellis plantation home, named Pleasant Lawn by Houston, was located about
thirty miles north of Liberty on the east side of the Trinity River. Here lived Benjamin
Ellis and his family, including his brother, Joseph. Ellis, 49-50.
James Hamilton. On September 12, 1844, Hamilton had written U. S. Secretary of
State John Calhoun that he would go to Texas in November and that he "could
carry the country in the direction we desire against Houston.... my friends will be
in power and he will be out of power on the 1st Dec. and we will carry matters with
a rush." Friend, 143-44.
