THE TEXAS PERMIAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND THE TEXAS
State Historical Survey Committee were co-sponsors of
a conference on Archives and historical manuscripts at
Odessa on September 8, 1962. Forty-four persons-librarians,
collectors, teachers, and representatives of local historical groups
-from thirteen communities attended the meeting, which was
held at the Odessa Public Library. The interest shown in pre-
serving the manuscript records of West Texas' past was astound-
ing, and it is not difficult to predict that in the next few years
an active and aggressive collection program will do much in this
area for the cause of Texas history. The guiding lights were Con-
rad Dunagan, well known as the chief promoter of the unique
Monahans Museum, and John Ben Shepperd. The Southwest
Collection at Texas Tech, with Seymour V. Connor as director,
will act as a co-ordinating body to maintain a central catalogue
on material collected.
The Summerfield G. Roberts Collection of Texas Hero Por-
traits by Charles B. Norman, which includes Sam Houston, Ben
Milam, Stephen F. Austin, James Bowie, William B. Travis,
James B. Bonham, Mirabeau B. Lamar, James W. Fannin, and
David Crockett, is continuing its well received tour of the state.
It has been on exhibit in the Hall of State at Dallas, in the
Texas State Archives and Library Building at Austin, in the
Witte Museum at San Antonio, in Longview, Tyler, Nacogdo-
ches, Canyon, Mineola, Corsicana, and in the San Jacinto Muse-
um at Houston.
Mrs. Winfield Scott Hamlin, president of the San Antonio
Conservation Society, announced recently that the society is pre-
paring an historical site index of San Antonio buildings which
will include the dates of construction, historical and architectural
significance, and references in publications.
