The Local History and Genealogical Society held its tenth an-
nual meeting at the Dallas Public Library on May 22 and 23,

The Harris County Historical Society has recently agreed to
pay most of the costs of restoring a painting of Erastus "Deaf"
Smith, believed to have been painted by Jefferson Wright, which
hangs in the San Jacinto Museum. The delicate restoration,
which will require approximately a year, will be carried out by
Jack Key Flanagan, conservator of the Houston Museum of Fine
Arts.
The Archives section of the Washington State University Li-
brary, Pullman, Washington, has kindly sent to the Association

gether with references to William Jennings Bryan and the Gold
Democrats.
Research on a book about President Lyndon B. Johnson's life
from his birth to his entrance into politics is well under way at
Southwest Texas State College, his alma mater. The authors will
be Emmie Craddock, David Conrad, and William Pool, three
members of the history faculty.
Memorials have taken various forms throughout the years but
in "the most lasting form" must be a book. There are many who
still remember the long years of service that Rudolph Leopold
Biesele rendered to the University of Texas and to the Texas
State Historical Association. Biesele was the writer of a lasting
book, The History of the German Settlements in Texas, z831-
i86. This book has long been out of print but it has been
reproduced by Mrs. Biesele and members of the family. It will
always be a lasting book of Texas.
Inquiries may be addressed to Mrs. R. L. Biesele, 23o8 Bridle
Path, Austin, Texas.
