Not all the characters in The Centuries of Santa Fe are Catholic, of
course, but it is clear that the presence of the Roman Church in Santa Fe is
central to the life of the area. The Church in the Southwest is Spanish in
origin and has tended to affect the entire region, even trying to absorb the
Indians. Its ancient and powerful presence must have amazed Horgan
when he first arrived in New Mexico. Buffalo had a large Catholic popula-
tion, but the Roman Church is not one of the central forces of life there
as it is in the Southwest. Horgan's family had been deeply committed to
Catholicism and the young Horgan in the Southwest for the first time found
in the presence of the Church, its ancient Spanish history, its overriding
influence, and its complex character, a new affirmation of the breadth of
a faith that could, in the United States and outside this region, sometimes
seem rather raw and vulgar. Horgan has been called a "Catholic" writer,
a limitation he likes no better than being called a "Western" writer.
Catholicism is a fact of his life-one of many-and he has never denied it
or ignored it, but he has not tried to shape material in any special way to
reach a special audience. He has allowed all the various influences of his
character to operate freely and has concerned himself with using these
influences to create a structure that is expressive of his intentions. He has
written about priests-one of his finest stories, "The Devil in the Desert," is1.-"
