of two works on the growth of a young man in the Southwest. From the
Royal City,23 also in 1936, was a tentative step toward the writing of history
using the techniques of fiction. The Return of the Weed,24 his third book
to appear in 1936, was a collection of short stories, with illustrations by
Peter Hurd. A novel that remains his best for many readers, one that con-
tinues the life of the same young man in the Southwest, A Lamp on the
Plains,25 appeared in 1937. New Mexico's Own Chronicle26 in 1937 was
