A former All-American will be calling the signals for the Texas State
Historical Association during the coming year. Ben H. Procter, professor
of history at Texas Christian University, took over the duties of the As-
sociation presidency on March 9 in San Antonio at the annual meeting.
That position is vastly different from the one he once held on the Uni-
versity of Texas football teams of 1947 to 1950, when he played end.
In 1950 Bill Stern named Ben to his All-American team.
After a year's experiment with pro football, Ben chose to return to
academia. He entered Harvard and earned his Ph.D. Since 1957 Ben has
taught at TCU. His Not Without Honor: The Life of John H. Reagan
heads a long list of publications; and Texas: The Land and Its People,
that he coauthored, is a highly popular work with school teachers and is
used in more than half of the junior high schools in Texas.
A member of many scholarly organizations, including the American
Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, Southern
Historical Association, and the Western Historical Association, Ben is
a frequent speaker, panelist, and participant at historical meetings
throughout the country. Several years ago he was named Piper professor
of the year and received a grant from the Piper Foundation for "out-
standing academic, scientific and scholarly achievement." For many
years he has been a very active and versatile member of the Association,
and has served as program committee chairman, as membership com-
mittee chairman, and on the executive council. We happily welcome
him to the presidency of this organization.
A symposium on the history of agriculture in the southwestern United

with the United States Department of Agriculture will cosponsor the
event. Proposed major topics include energy and agriculture, agricul-
tural technology, veterinary medicine, pre-Columbian agriculture, ag-
