The Wildcats 33-6 victorv over
Howard Payne in the seison fin lie was
hird fought and well deserved yet in
the end it was insignificant
I embn Kinsler rumbled for 103
yards and I oyal Proffitt threw for three
touchdowns to help end the season on a
bright note
However the strong performances
were overslndowed by the death of
HI'U s offensive tackle Paul Cun
ningham who coll ipsed and died of a
heart seizure in the third quirter
Cunmnglnm jogged off the field after
sifety Bmnlieatv recovered a fumble
He then fainted was revived and then
collapsed on the sideline All efforts to
save Cunmnglnm failed mil he wis
pronouneed dead upon arrival at the
hospital
The game started out innocentlv

on the first series of the game Kinsler
took over breaking through the defense

passes Proffitt threw to Bob Shipley
for the two point conversion and ACU
led 14-0 with less than five minutes
gone in the first quarter
However the Wildcats temporarily
went to sleep on offense Against
Howard Payne's diluted offense Mark
Jackson and Mark Wilson held the
Yellowjickets in eheck Jackson in
tercepted his third pass of the year and
on the next HPU series Wilson picked
off his seventh pass of the season
Wilson played the rest of the game
with good statistics but no more in
tereeptions thus finishing his career
with 17 interceptions one short of
Tr iv is Home's career record
I never wanted anything as bad as I
wanted that said Wilson ' I don't
think I ve ever played as hard and
wanted anything that bad "
Jackson and Wilson s defensive play
didn t quite spark ACU s offense In
fact ACU didn t get on the board again
until late in the second quarter when
Proffitt nailed Culpepper with a 16 yard
touchdown pass with 25 seconds
remaining
Kinsler who was hampered by an
ankle injury seemed to ignore the pain
In leading the Wildcats on the drive
Kinsler broke loose for 38 yards on
three carries to bring ACU into scoring

' I just wanted to play hard since it
was my last game said the senior
from Ocala Fla The line gave me
some good holes and I just tried to turn
it loose '
Kinsler fell nothing short of doing just
that turning in the best performance
by a Wildcat this year The5 lOrunning
back averaged 7 5 yards every time he
touched the ball
On the ensuing kickoff with ACU
leading 20-0 Boo Jones' kick flopped
through the stiff wind and ACU
recov ered the loose ball w i th 23 seconds
remaining on HPU's 6 yard line
However the Wildcats attempt to score
was futile as a holding penalty dropped
ACU back 10 yards and Boo Jones' 33
yard field goal was blocked
The third quarter left plenty to be
desired Proffitt passed for 33 vards on
three completions to start another
drive but it ended on dropped passes
and his 9 yard punt into a ferocious
w ind did little to put Howard Pay ne in a
hole
After Wilson recovered a fumble
Kinsler and Bob Shipley churned out 41
yards and ACU was in seonng position
again However Rocket Rod Mathis
fumbled inside the 10 yard line and the
Yellow jackets recovered
