Panelists

"You can do it with God's
leadership" was the central
message of the six women who
participated in a panel
discussion in connection with
the first Howard Payne
Christian Women's Seminar
Monday night.
Moderating the discussion
was Mrs. Barbara Cun-
ningham former missionary to
Africa and currently wife of the
pastor of Westbury Baptist
Church in Houston.
Panel participants included
Mrs. Kaye Sockol representing
the role of the professional
woman; Mrs. Frank Taylor
representing the widowed
woman; Mrs. Katie Brown
representing the pastor's wife;
Mrs. Glendene Elliot
representing the full-time
church staffer; and Mary
Special elections next week
Special elections to fill four
yell leader positions and two
Studen Union Board
representative positions will be
held Tuesday Jan. 29.

News notes-
Business manager needed
Applications for business manager of the Yellow Jacket are
now being taken by Miss Tessica Martin newspaper sponsor
through Monday Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. Interested persons may apply
in Winebrenner 108.
The position which carries a scholarship includes selling
advertisements laying out and making up ads and mailing and
delivering newspapers.
Lasso portraits set
Portraits for new students and makeup portraits from last
semester for the Lasso yearbook will be taken Friday Feb. 1 at
Burk's Studio off Austin Ave. on Ave. C said Alberto Perez
Lasso editor.
The makeup times are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. at the
studio located midway between the two HP campuses.
Art show in progress
The Texas Fine Arts Association's 08th Annual Traveling
exhibition is on display in the Howard Payne University art
gallery until February 1.
The 15 piece show described by acting head of the art depart-
ment Maurine Stewart as "extremely varied" includes water-

Gallery hours are 2-5 p.m. daily except Saturday.

Mrs. Cunningham led the
panel to discuss their various
backgrounds and current roles
in society.
Mrs. Brown whose husband
is pastor of First Baptist
Church Brownwood looked to
her mother as an example of a
pastor's wife. Her grandmother
and great-grandmother were
also preacher's wives.
She spoke favorably of being
a pastor's wife noting that the
"advantages outweigh the
disadvantages in living in such
a 'fishbowl' situation."
Mrs. Taylor spoke of her days
at Howard Payne College in Dr.
0. E. Winebrenner's biology
classes and of her graduation 50
years ago as a means of in-
troduction. She became a
widow five years ago and
cautioned the group present
against leaving all the family

the responsibilities and
restraints marriage brings. She
added with a smile "When
you're single everyone want's
to know what's wrong with you.
But.there doesn't have to be
anything wrong with you and
God can use you."

Voting boxes will be open
from noon-6 p.m. in all dorms.
Students must vote in the dorm
in which they live; off-camnus
students will vote in Jennings.
Absentee voting will be held
Monday Jan. 28 in the Office of
Student Affairs from 8-11 a.m.
and from 1-5 p.m.
Diploma deadline
Friday Feb. 1
Deadline for seniors
graduating in May to order
diplomas is Friday Feb. 1. Cost
is $2 and may be paid at the

Yell leader problems dominate senate
Cheerleaders and Jennings
lobby improvements dominated
conversation in the first
regular meeting of Student
Association senate Tuesday
night.
After a lengthy discussion it
was decided that junior varsity
cheerleaders would not move up
to fill the vacancies created by
upperclassmen resignations.
Therefore when elections are
held next Tuesday students will
vote on two upperclassmen
male positions one up-
perclassmen woman position
and one freshman male
position.
at First Baptist Church San
Angleo gave some statistics of
the women enrolled in church-
related majors in colleges and
seminaries.
"Women" she said "make
up approximately 20 percent of
the enrollment of our Southern
Baptist seminaries namely
Southwestern in Fort Worth and
Southern in Louisville Ken-
tucky." She presented statistics
that showed more women going
into chaplaincy and education
programs. She also noted that
Southern Baptists are now
ordaining women as pastors
but most ordaining is done in
the Eastern seaborad states.
Kaye Sockol Brownwood
school teacher discussed her
life as a professional woman
and its opportunities to serve
Christ. She also related a
divorce experience and
cautioned the group to take
dating and marriage seriously
without yielding to peer

Monday night at the first ever Christian Women's Seminar
The deadline for filing was
also extended until today at 5
p.m. Candidates may file in the
Office of Student Affairs and
must have a petition supporting
their candidacy.
Prices for the items -suggested
for Jennings lobby
improvements were discussed.
A total of $5574 in additions will
be suggested to the HP Board of
Trustees which will meet and
take up the matter Feb. 5. Pool

a new television television area
carpet improved lighting and
pinball machines were the
pressure.
The discussion concluded
with Mrs. Cunningham leading
the audience in a feedback
discussion recapping the
central theme of the importance
of God's leadership in the' daily
life of today's christian woman.
Lillian Gandy director of
women's services credited
practical theology major
Suzanne Doornbos with the idea
of sponsoring a Christian
Women's Seminar on campus.
She discussed future plans that
are envisioned for the event
hoping to develop a workshop
situation that offers one hour
credit.
Other faculty committee
members that sponsord the
event are Corrine Sheilds Sara
Baker and Charlotte LdUghlin.
Serving with Doornbos on the
student committee were Sheila
Alexander Vivian Ball Annette
Cox Vicki Crumpton and Miki
Mieth.
recommended items from the
senate.
In other action David Griffith
was appointed elections
chairman to replace Charlene
Sanders who resigned Tuesday
night. Iirry Brownfie.ld was
named elections vice-chairman
to handle the additional
publicity duties senate given the
elections committee last
semester.
Junior senator Sonya
Schroeder reported that the 1980
annual will be ready at
registration in the fall ac-
cording to Miss Tessica Martin
sponsor.
