HP enrollment 'holds'
An increase in junior senior special studies and Corpus
Christi Center students of Howard Payne for the spring
semester with an overall enrollment decrease of 3.5 percent
from the fall semester was announced by Dr. Ralph A.
Phelps Jr. HP president. .
This semester's enrollment at HP is 1257 compared to last
fall's 1302 figure.
"We are gratified that our holding power has been so
graphically demonstrated" Dr. Phelps said. "We have
made a number of long-due changes on campus and it is ob
vious that the majority of students does not fear change but
sees it as progress."
The head count of 45 people or 3.5 percent is a smaller-
than normal attrition rate he said.
According to the University registrar Bennett W.
Ragsdale a 5-10 percent decrease in enrollment trom the fall
to spring is not an unusual thing.

is proclaimed
by U.5. Senate

"National Circle K Week" by
the U.S. Senate A resolution
passed by the senate says the
week has been proclaimed to
"show appreciation and sup-
port" of the international
organization.
Officers for the Howard
Payne chapter are Dale Felder
president; Steve Bolles vice
president; Alberto Perez
secretary; Larry Brownfield
.treasurer; David Griffith
lieutenant Governor; Dean
Cassily chaplain and director;
and Karen Weedon sweetheart.
Faculty advisors are Dr. Bryce
Sandlin and Dr. Frank Brister.
Kiwanis adviser is Rick
Newton.
The Howard Payne group Is
involved in several service
projects on campus and is
planning a Cystic Fibrosis Bike-A-Thon
in April said Perez.
Pledges for this semester are

Bobby Irvin Dana Splitstone
Scott Smith and Harry Waldron.
The International group is
currently involved in service
projects to help children in
crisis situations and abused
and lonely children under the
theme "Caring is Life's
Magic."

Training Conference at Hardin-
Simmons University in Abilene
is a time of learning leadership

There will be four workshops

supply leadership materials
and ideas for 16 areas of
ministries.
Community Concerts presents saxophonist
Howard Payne students have
the opportunity to hear one of
the world's best saxaphonists as
a part of their activity fees said
Mrs. Pat Hailey membership
vice president for the Brown-
wood Community Concert
Association.
The artist is Harvey Pittel.
His concert will be ai 8 p.m.
These areas include publicity
of which Peterson is chairman;
missions; socials; in-
ternationals; fine arts;
workshop and evangelism.
During the Saturday night
program Dean Cassily an HP
business major will be
recognized as a summer
missionary for 1981. This is a
very special time in the life of
HP students since Dean will be
surving as our representative in
the 1981 Baptist Student Union
program Peterson said.
Cassily is active in state school
volunteer missions and in La
HoraBautista.
Saturday in Mims Auditorium.
Any Howard Payne student
may attend by showing his ID
card
Pittel "is considered by many
to be the best saxaphonist in the
world" Mrs. Hailey said.
A group from Corpus Christi
who "could not believe we
would have an artist of this
raised at a penny a vote for a scholarship to
be named in honor of Mrs. Gandy. The
amount will be put into an endowed SF

HP students may stay at the
Sheraton Motor Inn for $6.50 per
night. The students will be
responsible for all six of their
meals. The food Services at
Hardin-Simmons will supply a
lunch for approximately 2

Friday night. There is no
charge for registration.
Speakers will include Don
McCall minister of music at
First Baptist Church Ivring;
William Hendericks professor
of theology at Golden Gate
Seminiary; and Bill Sherman
pastor of Woodmont Baptist
Church Nashville.

Showing from 2-5 p. in daih
except Saturdays the exhibit
will continue through Feb. 19.
"This exhibit is the result of
the combined efforts of the
Texas Fine Arts Association
chapters throughout Texas"
Abdias said. "It began with
competitions in the various
regions of the state where
works were selected by jurors
and forwarded to the State
Citation Exhibit in Austin."

Louis Cady is scheduled for 3
p.m. Sunday Feb. 15 in Mims
Auditoiium.
Entitled "The Beethoven
Opus HI Sonata: "Gateway To
Heaven? " the program will be
one with "something for
everyone" Cady said.
Most recently the winner of
the 11th Annual Mozart Festival
National Young Artists'
Competition in Pueblo
Colorado Cady was hired by
University President Dr. Ralph
A. Phelps Jr. to "teach piano
and represent HPU by making
concert appearances ."
