Dr. Hester commented on the
elimination ol the dollar for-
dollar interpretation 'The
January proposed guidelines
calling for equal expenditures
was impractical unrealistic
and impossible Tlieie was no
way wo could spend as much for
gii Is' volleyball as we do for the
football program - why one
football uniform costs at least
ten times as much as a vol-
leyball uniform."
The new proposed guide
lines seem to take care of this
problem without indulging on
ino integrity ol the word

Dr. Hester interprets the
bim implementation model as
tailing foi Alfirmnlivc iib
stant latum of equal oppor-
tunities "I m'o the regulations
as .iv ing we must furnish equal
services and support for both
sexes m the athletic program"
l)r Hester said "For instanace
if we'ie going to provide shoes
I'm the football boys we must
piovide shoes for the girls in-
volved in volleyball And the
volleyball team shouldn't he re-
quired to return to MeMurry the
same night after panics at Sul
Koss if we'ie going to allow the
lootball team to rent motel
rooms and spend the night in
Alpine after their name "
AsUetl about funding and
seholarship in the ntbletle
program Dr. Hester noted
that he had already proposed
to the Athletic Committee of
the Hoard of Trustees a
"More realistic" program for
women. He quoted a monet-
ary increase request of $1000
over the $1200 budgeted this
year for the women's prog
ram. And these figures com-
. (o hl. iiiiihciilc Hum of
$100 spent on the program in
1072.711.
MeMurry has tried to re-
spond to the needs of her women
athletes in the past Two years
ago. a volleyball team was or-
ganized at the request of in-
terested co-eds Last year in ad-
dition to the volleyball program
a basketball team was set up.
This year both sports are in
full swing and Dr Hester is op-
timistic about next year's prog-
rams and the necessary funding
Calling for continued sen
sitivity to the needs of
McMuiry's co-eds Dr. Hester
said We have to communicate
with the girls to find out what

with HEW proposed regain-
t ions which w mild dictate that a
college determine at least
annually using a method which
is acceptable in what sports
members of each sex would de-
sire to compete."
The new regulations if they
go into effect would also make
stipulations for two of the hot-
test issues in athletics: separate
segregated teams and compara-
ble dressing facilities. Under the
ruling athletics for which
selection is based on com-
petitive skills may be provided
through separate teams for
males and females to the extent
