New school
flag greets
McM students
Jean Erwin doesn't claim to be a
Betsy Ross but she is responsible for
McMurry College having its first flag
in the school's 66-ycar history.
Mrs. Erwin is well known at St.
Paul United Methodist Church for
making banners and flags. Her hus-
band Chuck an Abilene attorney is
the secretary of die McMurry board of
trustees. So it was only natural that
Dr. Thomas Kim a fellow church
member and president of McMurry
asked Mrs. Erwin if she would put her
sewing talents to good use and create
a flag for the college.
Shctricd.butfoundthatshccouldn't
get die fabric or the type of sewing
machine she needed. So she did the
next best tiling. Mrs. Erwin found a
donor who wishes to remain anony-
mous to pay a Fort Worth manufac-
turing company to make four
McMurry flags three for outdoorusc
and unothcrmorc elaborately designed
one for indoors.
The flag was hoisted a couple of
weeks ago just in time for the begin-
ning of a new school year at McMurry.
Registration for the fall semester will
be held Tuesday Aug. 29 and classes
begin die following day.
