few problems
I rom my own observations
many students have a similar
dilemma when it conies to find
mg time My problem is I cm
never get help from the servic-
es offered on campus
Information services is one
example of a service I cannot
use 90 percent of the tune

students their hours leave
something to be desired
Despite the fact that there are
five people in the department
they all go to lunch at noon
and return at one I am not say
ago. and as much as both candidates
wish thev could hop into their time
machines and fix it- they can't So
how about we focus on issues that
might actually help the country like
the budget or terrorism or I don't
know something that might actually
""i have some validity

Listening to stu-
dent's voice things
like "We should
lust shoot John
l'e Conner Kerry is not only
disappointing but
also just stupid So if you're coming
at the election from that angle maybe
you should try to turn on a TV and
watch a debite or listen to the news
Pick up a newspaper and look at
some polls take a government class-
any thing
It's really easy to voice hatred tor
John Kerry when you live in Texas
but consider what you might hear if
you lived somewhere like California
I'm sure that if you heard some peo-
ple shouting about how George W
Bush was the devil you'd get a little
annoyed too
So belore you hop up on your soap
box get your facts straight (or just get
some facts') If you choose to repre-
sent either party do a decent job And
please leave the disp iraging rem irks

CamPus relationships exciting
As I am caught saying on a most T7""""?"T!nMBBHHHHi!i I amily than any glossy media piec
frequent basis It's an exciting time
to be on the McMurry campus1
I could point to the improvements
that have greeted us as we started the
new school year There are many -new
classroom furniture in Old Mam
and the Science Building new resi-
dence hall furniture in Martin Hall and
game and entertainment upgrades in
all of the halls. Real Food on Campus
and a new I acuity I oungc the early
steps in establishing a wireless net-
work on campus and the near comple-
tion of negotiations to renovate Hunt
and Martin Residence Halls-improvements
completed or on the way
But as exciting as those projects
might be they are not the items that
have triggered my most recent bout of
excitement Those projects arc
THINGS I'm excited about PEOPLE1
And here's why
The recent Tamily Weekend activi-
ties drew nearly 200 family members
and friends of McMurry students I
was particularly heartened by the
number of faculty and stall that helped
make the families feci at home during
the weekend events In a most dramat-
ic manner these folks were reinforc-
ing the role Personal Relationships
play in shaping the McMurry Family
Equally important they took the time
to ensure that parents and brothers
and sisters felt they were part of that
Tamily - geographically separated
though they might be These faculty
and staff are making a difference1

I also had the chance to visit with
student groups who were invoked in
the Institutional Advancement Phone-a-thon
that occurred this week and
last In a very different way these
young students were helping McMurry
alumni connect and reconnect w ith
their university In a most respectful
and articulate manner the students
demonstrated the catalytic role played
by Personal Relationships in shaping
and reshaping the McMurry Tamily
Their engagement with alumni
brought a degree of enjoyment to stu-
dents and alumni alike These students
are making a difference1
But it's the PEOPLI interaction that
I don't see that leaves me most excited
and it's one that occurs each and
every day on the McMurry campus
It's the intersection that occurs
between an engaged faculty and
engaged students It's the Personal
Relationship that is established and
nurtured in the classroom in the labs
on the playing fields and in our office
areas How the campus community
internally embraces the Core Value-
Personal Relationships as the Catalyst

I don t see it-I'm not 111 the class-room-but
I leant about it Students
and moms and d ids speak to the pow -crlul
impact of a concerned instructor
Likewise faculty describe the "above
and beyond' investment of time and
energy made by engaged students
Both students and faculty speak of the
catalytic-like imp let that comes from
the aforementioned intersection one
that powers both groups to a more
productive and fulfilling presence on
the McMurry campus It's an intersec-
tion I don't see but it occurs This
intersection is making a big differ-
ence' The faculty participants from
I amily Weekend were clearly making
a dilferencc for our students' families
And the phonc-a-thon students were
certainly making a difference for
alumni But my image of fully
engaged faculty and students spells
opportunity of almost limitless poten-
tial now and 111 the future Get to
know your teachers attend class
leant about your students' dreams and
fears let litem know that you know
they've missed class get and stay
engaged
When we do that the intersection is
most effective and the McMurry
University vision begins to become
reality
